Self-guided visits

Teachers are welcome to design their own programme of study within the Museum. However self-guided visits must be booked in advance. Entrance to the Museum is free of charge.

Home educators

The Museum welcomes home educators. Please see the schools section of our website for more information about our taught workshops at the Museum.

Teachers may take photos of their group during a workshop, but photographs in the galleries and historic rooms should be taken without flash.

Where possible we will endeavour to provide groups who have booked a visit/workshop a space to eat their packed lunches.

Visiting the shop

We have a small gift shop, however to ease congestion in the shop area we ask schools to pre-order gift bags which cost £3.

Teachers and Group Leaders are responsible for the behaviour and general health and safety of their pupils and groups within the Museum. Teachers, leaders, and accompanying adults should remain with their groups at all times for their health and safety, and in case of evacuation.

We require the following minimum adult to pupil/student ratio:

  • Pre–school — Nursery 1:6
  • Foundation — KS2 1:10
  • KS3 — 5 1:10
  • Pupils/students with a disability and/or behavioural needs — 1:1

Please be aware that it is your responsibility to ensure that the ratio is adequate for the pupils’ needs/behaviour. Small groups will need a minimum of 2 adults to cover supervision in the event of accidents or sickness.

We have a Vulnerable Adults and Child Protection Policy.

The Designated Officer for Child Protection is Sue Killen.
